At our Remembrance Sunday service yesterday, we heard from Rev Peter Cornick who spoke to us about Operation Market Garden and the liberation of Normandy during the Second World War. He also recalls his own conversations with veterans, and how these veterans saw war and their own actions in battle not as heroic or brave, but a traumatic experience they were lucky to have survived while many of their friends had not.
Peter also emphasised how ‘to stand on those now peaceful beaches [in Normandy] is to have a powerful reminder of the horror of war’ and spoke of the difficulty and contradiction in responding to this horror with violence in turn in order to achieve peace.
