12 Step Groups

Hinde Street Methodist Church has a long tradition of offering hospitality to 12 Step Groups, also known as Anonymous Groups. There are over 30 different Anonymous groups that meet on our premises, and we are committed to ensuring that meeting rooms continue to be available at low cost for them, right here in the heart of the West End.

In hosting 12 Step Groups, we are following in the footsteps of not only the Methodist movement, but also Hugh Price Hughes, the founder of the West London Mission, and the temperance movement who worked hard at the end of the 19th century to support people struggling with alcohol addiction.

We hope that our church can offer a safe space for anyone battling with addiction to find understanding and support from each other, as well as from the congregation that worships here. Even though many of the people who attend the groups during the week will never meet the people who gather here on a Sunday, we want you to know that we care about you and hold you in prayer.

Aside from our meeting rooms, we have made a quiet space available at the entrance to the church where you can sit before or after group meetings to think, pray, or just to have a bit of peace in a busy city. Additionally, a Meditation group meets in the Quiet Room at Hinde Street every Tuesday lunchtime, from 1:15-2pm.

Many anonymous group members come along to share in our quiet time together, either every week, or just occasionally when they have time. Meditation is, of course, the 11th of the 12 steps, and our calm little group can be a good place to practice quiet attention to the present moment. We find that the quality of the silence created by the group is really quite special. All are welcome – and there is no cost.

If you want to know which 12 Step Groups are meeting at Hinde Street and when, you can have a look at our weekly schedule (last updated 3 August 2026). Groups are arranged individually, so we encourage you to check with the group you are interested in for the latest information before attending for the first time.
