“Privilege is when we can ignore injustice because it doesn’t affect us.”
What can we do in the face of media, news and government statements and policies which seem to be reversing the gospel values we cherish, such as valuing diversity, fighting discrimination, protecting people’s identities, and treating everyone with equity?
At the Sunday service on May 18th, we shared these ideas… do you have more?
*Write to your MP.
*Sign reputable petitions on the issues we care about.
*Be visible – be ‘out and alongside’ people, e.g. at Pride.
*Follow the work of The Joint Public Issues Team.
*Look up resources on global justice from Christian Aid.
*look up the work and campaigns of 38 Degrees.
*Listen, read up and learn about current issues so that we can take part in the conversation.
*Not react to ‘clickbait’ headlines but read the whole story.
*Recognise the agenda when some media wants to vilify and victimise certain groups of people – what’s their real intention?
*Think of Jesus’ call to ‘love as I have loved you’ when we respond to people in need, and when we read stories inciting us to hate certain others.
*Learn language and understanding so that we can be allies, e.g. the Trans Ally booklets available at church.
*Keep Hope – Love DOES win.
