At our Easter Sunday service, we took Holy Communion with our prayers arranged around the table, reminiscent of a scattering of flowers. We also heard a reflection on the words spoken by Jesus as he appears to Mary Magdalen following the disappearance of his body from the tomb: “Why are you weeping”. These are words that may seem baffling at first – is Mary’s grief not obvious to Jesus? However, as Deacon Ruth reminded us this Easter morning, this statement reminds us that in the moment of our greatest pain, Jesus is there – and he is listening.
Let us then ask more often of each other “why are you weeping”, and really listen to the answer – even when we think we already know the answer.
