Rev Dr Jonathan Dean to preach Soper sermon 2026

Hinde Street’s annual Soper service will be taking place at 11am this Sunday 25th January. This special service honours the life-long religious and political work of Lord Donald Soper, and this year, Hinde Street is proud to welcome the Rev Dr Jonathan Dean to deliver the sermon.

Jonathan is the Chair of the London District of the Methodist Church, working alongside London’s 200+ Methodist congregations, and with missional and chaplaincy projects across the capital. He has served in a variety of appointments, in the local church, in a range of chaplaincy contexts, and in theological and higher education, all in both the UK and the US. He was Director of the Centre for Continuing Ministerial Development at The Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham before becoming Director of Learning for Ministry for the Methodist Church. He is the author of five published books on themes in Christian history and historical theology. Jonathan counts coffee-drinking, dog-walking, music-listening and cooking among his favourite activities and is a faithful if constantly disappointed follower of Norwich City F.C..

Here are a few words from Jonathan regarding his upcoming service:

“From my early formative days growing up in Methodism, Donald Soper has been an iconic figure for me: a witness for peace and justice, a leader of God’s people, a preacher of rare insight and passion, and someone by whose ministry many others were encouraged, enabled and inspired. It’s a huge honour to deliver this year’s Soper sermon at Hinde Street, and to honour his legacy.”

Please join us 11am this Sunday, January 25th.
