Wednesday Club

For the past forty years or so, we have opened our doors every Wednesday to people who are affected by homelessness or who feel somewhat rootless in our city.  We make hot food such as soup and pies, and we also offer fresh sandwiches, fruit, tea and coffee. The doors to our Basement Hall are open from 4pm until 6.30pm every Wednesday. Just turn up!

If you wish to know more, you can read all about the experiences of volunteers and guests here.

Whilst the primary purpose of Wednesday Club is to provide food, warmth and hospitality to our guests, from a personal perspective, Wednesday club is about so much more. As a volunteer, I find great happiness in the friendships I’ve made with many special people, many who have nothing but the clothes they wear.

The perception that many people would have is that our guests are different from you or me. The reality is very different, and the same cross-section of personality is present in all our guests, whether it’s kindness, intelligence, or indeed the traits we all wish we didn’t have. I find tremendous joy in making difficult circumstances slightly less difficult, but just as I hope I help our guests, I can absolutely assure you that our guests enhance my own life.

Last but certainly not least, working with our wonderful volunteers reminds me that humanity can be extremely kind. Without fail the people that have dedicated their lives to helping others, are truly wonderful people to spend time with, and that in itself makes spending time with them extremely special.

In December 2018 we were named a ‘Place of Welcome’ in Westminster.
