The Methodist Church at the heart of London's West End

Wesley Hymns

Picture
Charles Wesley was the greatest ever hymn writer. 230 years after his death, his work remains as popular, relevant and inspirational as ever - Love divine, all loves excelling is still the hymn most often sung at church weddings.  But over the years words, tunes and entire hymns have been lost.  Wesley Hymns rediscovers and restores 98 lost gems, with music for organ or piano.  Among them:
  • Love divine to the Purcell tune which inspired it
  • Jesus, my Truth, my Way with music by J.S.Bach
  • The God of love, to earth He came, set to a tune by Thomas Arne
  • Original words for Christ the Lord is risen today
Also back in print is former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams' favourite Wesley hymn, Since the Son hath made me free.  "It's a hymn that for me contains the very essence of the New Testament and the Creed," he says.  "Charles Wesley sums up in a few brief verses whole swathes of St Paul's reflections on this basic truth and gives us a way of making sense of the Church's Trinitarian language in the simplest terms: no small achievement!"

BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship celebrated the launch of Wesley Hymns. The wonderful service at  Halifax Minster was filled with music by Halifax Choral Society (a fitting close to their bicentenary year). The preacher was Rev Dr Julie Lunn, an expert on Charles Wesley hymns and lecturer at Nazarene Theological College. Hinde Street would like to thank and congratulate all involved.
