Hinde Street Methodist Church

SPA

SPA is an opportunity for volunteers to engage once a week in social work among some of the most marginalised people in London, and share their experiences with each other in reflection groups.

SPA stands, with a little bit of cheating, for Spirituality in Action, and participants get involved in the social work projects of the West London Mission, including work with people who are homeless, or who suffer from long-term alcohol dependency. Some volunteers are students who live together in Methodist Chaplaincy House, but it is also open to gap year students, ministers on sabbatical and professional people who want to express their faith by serving ‘the other’ in a coordinated manner.

We work with participants to find the most suitable placement for them, and support them throughout, with mentoring and opportunities for theological reflection. As part of the Methodist West London Mission, SPA has an underlying Christian ethos, but it is open to people of any faith, or of no definite religious commitment, who want the chance to grow personally and spiritually through sharing with those who are different from them.

The programme offers regular opportunities for sharing, reflecting and praying about the work among ourselves. SPA is a chance for people of faith to engage in practical discipleship, and allows participants to test vocations and gain experience for careers in social work, counseling or psychotherapy.

An additional value of the SPA programme is that it brings more of a Christian presence into the professional social work of the West London Mission. This allows those services to reflect something of the faith that lies behind them, and provides a space for clients who want to talk about spiritual matters.
